Founded in 1958 and representing plaintiffs exclusively since 1973, our firm has a long and successful history of helping those who have been injured by the wrongdoing of others. As a result of the litigation we have pursued, products have become safer, medical policies and procedures have become more effective, and countless individuals have received just compensation for their injuries.
Consisting of 17 attorneys, a support staff of over 30 people, and a full-time investigative team that includes four former law enforcement officers, our hard work and dedication have resulted in the justice our clients deserve. Since 2003, Cunningham Bounds has had six verdicts listed in VerdictSearch's annual report of the top 100 verdicts in America. Recently, the firm secured a $20 million verdict in a wrongful death case for the family of a woman who died after her anesthesia care team failed to follow the accepted standards of care in administering her anesthesia. In 2008, the firm obtained an $192 million verdict for a local chemist whose invention was stolen by a German chemical company. In 2007, the firm obtained a verdict of $50 million for the family of a local man who was killed by a water heater that exploded. That same year, the firm obtained a $108 million verdict for a local company whose landfill was poisoned by hazardous waste improperly dumped by the defendants. The size of these verdicts represents both the magnitude of the wrong that was done and the extent of our commitment to get great results for our clients.
Cunningham Bounds was also honored to represent the State of Alabama, and, by extension, its taxpayers, in an oil and gas royalty fraud case against ExxonMobil in 2000. Up against one of the largest and most profitable companies in the world, the attorneys at Cunningham Bounds refused to back down. The firm obtained a $3.5 billion verdict on behalf of the state of Alabama in 2000. Although the Alabama Supreme Court subsequently reversed the verdict, the retrial resulted in a jury verdict of $11.9 billion. Our advocacy on behalf of the state of Alabama demonstrated that even the most sophisticated fraud against taxpayers will not be tolerated in our state.
Our class action practice has also been very successful. Our firm was lead counsel and lead trial counsel for a nationwide class of consumers against Masonite, a company that manufactured defective building material. Due to the persistence and dedication of our class action team, homeowners all across the country have collectively recovered nearly $1 billion to date. These homeowners suffered tremendously, and we are proud to have alleviated some of the problems created by the defective building material.
Our lawyers have been recognized in various publications for their excellence. The firm is continually ranked as a top litigation firm in publications such as Chambers USA, America's Leading Lawyers for Business and Benchmark Litigation. Thirteen of the firm's attorneys are listed as AV rated by Martindale-Hubbell, eight of the firm's attorneys are listed in Best Lawyers in America®, and seven of the firm's attorneys are listed in Alabama's Super Lawyers. In addition, our firm's attorneys participate at all levels of national, state and local civic and professional organizations, including the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, the International Society of Barristers, the American College of Trial Lawyers, the National Board of Trial Advocacy, the American Board of Trial Advocates, the Litigation Counsel of America, the American Association for Justice, the Alabama Association for Justice, Public Justice, the Alabama Civil Justice Foundation, and the Inns of Court.
Finally, Cunningham Bounds believes in the importance of giving back to the community in which we live and work. We provide legal services on a pro bono basis to those in our community who are unable to afford legal representation. In addition, our lawyers support numerous charitable organizations both financially and with their time and energy. From youth programs to civic boards, from religious institutions to sports organizations, from wildlife associations to conservation groups, our lawyers work just as hard outside the courtroom as they do inside in order to make our community a better place to live.
