
On January 15, 1998, the Circuit Court of Mobile County, Alabama granted final approval to a settlement of the lawsuit known as Naef v. Masonite, Mobile County Circuit Court Civil Action No. CV-94-4033. That settlement provided for the payment of claims for persons who had exterior Masonite hardboard siding installed and incorporated into their property between January 1, 1980 and January 15, 1998, and who suffered damages as a consequence of failure of the product.
The total amount paid for claims so far is $971,000,000.00. The average payment per homeowner is approximately three thousand five hundred seventy-nine dollars ($3,579.00). Over three hundred thousand claims have been received and processed.
January 19, 2005 was the deadline for the submission of claims arising from Masonite materials installed prior to December 31, 1989.
For material installed since January 1, 1990, the deadline is January 15, 2008 for hardboard products and January 6, 2009 for Omniwood and Woodruf products.
