Exploding Washing Machines Recalled

A recall has been announced after more than 700 reports of malfunctioning Samsung top-load washers.  Consumers have reported “machines shaking, falling over and sending parts flying,” resulting in damage to homes and serious physical injuries to residents.

The recall affects 34 models of Samsung’s washers manufactured since 2011.  According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “the washing machine top can unexpectedly detach from the washing machine chassis during use, posing a risk of injury from impact.”  Samsung confirmed that “the defect can occur when the machine is washing bedding or water-resistant and bulky items on a high-speed spin cycle.”

The recalled models were sold at Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowes and Sears, among other home appliance stores.  The list of recalled models may be found at:  https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2017/Samsung-Recalls-Top-Load-Washing-Machines.

This is the second major recall for Samsung this year.  Recently, Samsung recalled its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone due to the risk of exploding batteries.
