Creating Opportunity: How Cunningham Bounds Brought Student Chefs Into a Professional Kitchen

|

For the last two years, the Davidson High School culinary arts program has faced challenges. While it is exciting that its on-campus kitchen is being updated, the renovations have limited how much real cooking experience its students get during the semester. But that hasn’t slowed them down. If anything, these culinary students have only become more passionate about their love for cooking and sharing their creations with others.

That’s why our team at Cunningham Bounds is so excited to announce that we had the opportunity to team up with students of the Davidson High School culinary arts program and legendary local restaurateur Noell Broughton for the Downtown Cajun Cook-Off event at Cathedral Square, which we proudly sponsor each year! Noell has been kind enough to open his professional kitchen to the students. Under his stewardship, they learned specialized Cajun cooking techniques that they used during the competition, which they competed in as part of the Cunningham Bounds team.

Of course, the highlight of this partnership was the Downtown Cajun Cook-Off because it directly benefited the Child Advocacy Center of Mobile, Alabama. This non-profit organization provides free services to victims of child abuse and the loved ones who have done their best to protect them. Part of the proceeds earned by the Cook-Off competition went to the Child Advocacy Center. If you know Cunningham Bounds, then you probably already know how much we care about our communities, which is why we act as title sponsors for the Cook-Off each year.

The 2026 Downtown Cajun Cook-Off was a great success. It was a day full of fun, Cajun cuisine, live entertainment, and good vibes. It was the 10th anniversary of this event, too, so we have to say that we are looking forward to many more years of charitable cook-off competitions.

We want to take this time to share our genuine thanks for the culinary students of Davidson High School, who became honorary members of the Cunningham Bounds team, to both show off their cooking skills and benefit a tremendous cause. Of course, we must also show sincere thanks to Noell Broughton for opening his kitchen and his heart to these students. Thanks to him, their real-world experience in the kitchen was magnified tenfold, and we’re sure many of them will go on to pursue incredible culinary careers entirely due to his support. If you’re ever in the Mobile area, be sure to visit one of his pubs and eateries to share your gratitude and have a great bite!
