On November 13, 2020, our award-winning legal team at Cunningham Bounds, LLC obtained a $2 million jury verdict for a sheriff’s deputy who was injured when a Southeastern Freight Lines, Inc. tractor-trailer, traveling at more than 60 miles per hour, collided with his lawfully stopped service vehicle, aggravating his pre-existing spinal retrolisthesis. This remains as one of the few plaintiff verdicts to be achieved in the United States since the beginning of the COVID-19, or coronavirus, pandemic.

At the time of the trial, our client, Deputy Admire Gant, had already undergone six lumbar epidural procedures to treat his spinal retrolisthesis, a condition caused when a vertebra slips either backward or underneath a disc. This condition can lead to a host of issues, including dull or sharp pain, reduced mobility, and neurological symptoms. A medical testimony at the trial explained that Deputy Gant is likely to require medical care in the future to address his now-aggravated spinal retrolisthesis.

Due to the fact that the tractor-trailer rammed into Deputy Gant’s service vehicle — which was legally stopped on the Bayway Bridge to protect a street-sweeping operation — at such a high speed, the service vehicle was pitched up onto a retaining wall, and the tractor-trailer burned completely. The tractor-trailer driver retained zero injuries.

Our legal team was proud to represent Deputy Gant, who has lived a life in service of his fellow Americans. He has served in the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, and the Mobile Police Department; he continues to serve in the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office.
