General Maritime Law
Seamen who are injured offshore are entitled to certain protections and benefits. This body of law applies to seamen, ship owners, and those who ship cargo via water.
Under maritime law, a ship owner is obligated to do the following:
- To provide a vessel that is seaworthy, meaning it is maintained, equipped, and staffed
- To provide maintenance and cure benefits to the injured seaman until he recovers
Maintenance and cure benefits are designed to cover things such as food, rent, transportation, and other necessary expenses as determined by the courts. In addition, cure benefits would cover a variety of hospital and doctor bills. All concerns about obligations are expected to be resolved in the injured seaman’s favor.
