Pursue Compensation with a Top Personal Injury Firm in Alabama

Maritime law is a separate jurisdiction from national laws and is based on its own separate set of rules and codes. It is the law that typically governs insurance claims relating to cargo, ships, and piracy as well as disagreements between ship owners, seamen and passengers.

At Cunningham Bounds, we regularly advise clients on all matters relating to maritime law and have provided counsel in numerous maritime casualty investigations. Since 1958, our firm has obtained billions in verdicts and settlements and is considered one of the top personal injury firms in Alabama. Our Alabama maritime attorney team is experienced and committed to the success of each of our clients. We are known as trial lawyers who get results. In fact, Mr. Brown of our legal team is a member of the Inner Circle of Advocates, meaning that he is among the top 100 plaintiff attorneys in the nation.

General Maritime Law

Seamen who are injured offshore are entitled to certain protections and benefits. This body of law applies to seamen, ship owners, and those who ship cargo via water.

Under maritime law, a ship owner is obligated to do the following:

  • To provide a vessel that is seaworthy, meaning it is maintained, equipped, and staffed
  • To provide maintenance and cure benefits to the injured seaman until he recovers

Maintenance and cure benefits are designed to cover things such as food, rent, transportation, and other necessary expenses as determined by the courts. In addition, cure benefits would cover a variety of hospital and doctor bills. All concerns about obligations are expected to be resolved in the injured seaman’s favor.
