Zantac Attorneys In Alabama And Nationwide
On September 9, 2019, Valisure, an online pharmacy licensed in 38 states, submitted a “Citizen Petition” to the FDA asking the regulatory agency to request a recall and suspend sales of ranitidine, a popular drug commonly sold under the brand name Zantac.
Valisure detected “extremely high levels” of N-Nitrososdimethylamine (“NDMA”), a probable human carcinogen, “in every lot tested, across multiple manufacturers and dosage forms of the drug ranitidine [Zantac].” The FDA’s daily intake limit for the carcinogen NDMA is 96 ng. Valisure detected NDMA in excess of 3,000,000 ng per tablet of Zantac. Valisure’s testing showed that a single Zantac tablet contains the same amount of NDMA as 30 packs of cigarettes.
Within 4 days of receiving Valisure’s Citizen Petition, the FDA notified the public that NDMA had been found in ranitidine medicines, including Zantac. Within weeks, manufacturers, distributors, and retailers of Zantac issued nationwide recalls.
Early investigation raises concerns that pharmaceutical companies knew that Zantac greatly increased a person’s likelihood of developing cancer but altered the science to hide the association between Zantac and NDMA.
Exposure to NDMA is associated with the following cancers:
- Colorectal cancer
- Stomach/gastric cancer
- Small intestine cancer
- Esophageal cancer
- Liver cancer
- Prostate cancer (60 years or younger)
- Pancreatic cancer
- Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
- Multiple myeloma
